We're improving the National Cycle Network in Scotland

We are custodians of the National Cycle Network – a UK-wide network of signed paths and routes for walking, wheeling and cycling that bring us closer to the people and places we love.

Across Scotland we’re improving the Network by building new paths and upgrading existing ones, removing access barriers and creating connections to public transport, schools, neighbouring towns and vital services.

Alongside working with our volunteers to take care of the Network, we collaborate with communities to breathe life into their local routes through public artwork – encouraging people to connect with nature and their local area.

We're empowering people to choose active travel

We work with people and communities to empower them with the skills and confidence to make active everyday journeys.

Through our longstanding I Bike programme, we work directly with schools across Scotland to embed a whole school approach to active travel.

We also work with local authorities and regional transport partnerships to develop tools and strategies that empower more people to walk, wheel and cycle.

We’re designing sustainable, liveable places

We offer specialist, in-house multi-disciplinary expertise in the planning, design and engineering of active travel infrastructure and placemaking. This is expertise we’ve built through award-winning programmes, funded by the Scottish Government.

Our Street Design and Pocket Places programmes supported community-led design that put residents' ideas and views at the forefront of decisions.

Our Places for Everyone programme was the leading permanent active travel infrastructure fund in Scotland. Across 7 years the programme has delivered over 250 projects – ranging from multi-million-pound transformations in cities to new routes between some of our smallest communities.

We’re connecting neighbourhoods to help them thrive

We want to see connected, thriving neighbourhoods where everyone is free to move around with ease.

By providing research, technical expertise and tailored services, we’re working with partners across planning, local authorities and transport providers to help integrate active travel with how we live.

We’re working across three priority areas to do this: school journeys, new homes and developments, and buses and trains.

We’re demonstrating impact to advocate for change

We work closely with the Scottish Goverment, local authorities and other agencies to ensure that investment into active travel is prioritised.

By developing robust research and showcasing the difference walking, wheeling and cycling makes to people’s lives, we are able to influence policy development across transport decarbonisation, planning and regeneration.

The Walking and Cycling Index is our flagship research programme. We work with each city in Scotland to produce reports every two years, which inform local decision-making and justify investment in active travel.

Our manifesto for the 2026 Holyrood election

We're calling on the next Scottish Government to put active travel at the heart of its plans for a fairer, healthier future.
