Scotland Walking and Cycling Index

Formerly known as Bike Life, this is the UK's biggest ever study of walking, wheeling and cycling.

Bringing together data from eight cities, the second ever Scotland Walking and Cycling Index tells us how active travel is changing across the country and the support people need to walk, wheel and cycle more.

Every year walking, wheeling and cycling in Scotland's cities results in:

4,530

serious long-term health conditions prevented

£1.48 billion

in economic benefit for individuals and the region

93,000 tonnes

of greenhouse gas emissions saved

Up to 520,000

cars taken off the road every day

I have agoraphobia so my bike’s been essential in doing exposure therapy, which is the main way that people with agoraphobia recover. I really struggle with not feeling in control and I can’t drive so it just got more and more difficult to get around.

I tried out my friend’s e-bike and I was like “this is the best thing in the whole world” and so I saved my money and bought one.

I didn’t see myself as a cyclist at all, but I suppose I am. I honestly never thought I’d ever be able to get into town again. I actually don’t mind cycling on roads. It does feel quite empowering sometimes.
