Route closures and works in England and Wales

A list of the current route closures and works across England and Wales.

National Cycle Network route 3 sign

We encourage local authorities and other statutory bodies responsible for land traversed by the National Cycle Network to use their powers to keep National Cycle Network routes open, free from obstruction and well maintained.

Where routes are temporarily closed we ask that they make appropriate arrangements, including appropriate directional signage, and that they provide information to the public both before and during the work.

If we are notified, we do our best to help by listing issues on this page and linking to the information they provide.

Something not here that should be? Please let us know of any significant route diversions or closures not mentioned below.

Closures by region

East Midlands

Temporary closure of Route 64 (Nutbrook Trail) – from September 2025

A section of Route 64, known as the Nutbrook Trail, between Crompton Road and the Erewash Canal in Ilkeston will be closed from early September 2025. This closure is due to the redevelopment of the adjacent New Stanton Park.

A new, improved path is being constructed through the business park to replace the existing route. This will provide a safer and more direct connection between the Nutbrook Trail and the Erewash Canal, removing the need to cross Crompton Road.

Works to relocate the current path will take place throughout the autumn. During this time, this section of the trail will be inaccessible.

An alternative route is available via Crompton Road and Hallam Fields Road. Please plan your journey in advance and allow extra time if travelling in this area.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during these improvements.

Temporary closure of the Cloud Trail (Route 6)

A section of the Cloud Trail in northwest Leicestershire will be closed for essential resurfacing work from the week commencing 29 September 2025. The work is expected to take 4–6 weeks.

The closures will affect:

  • The section between Breedon Lane (Worthington) and Doctor’s Lane (Breedon-on-the-Hill)

  • The stretch known as Middle Brand, from Breedon Lane (Worthington) towards Top Brand

The works will repair flood-damaged areas and upgrade part of the stone path to tarmac, making the trail more accessible and resilient.

Please note: there will be no official diversions in place. If you’re planning a through-journey, you’ll need to make alternative arrangements. For local use, we recommend dog walkers use the Top Brand section and the path next to the quarry.

Thank you for your patience while we carry out these improvements.

Temporary disruption on Route 1, Water Rail Way near Kirkstead Bridge

Essential maintenance work will take place on the Water Rail Way (Route 1) near Kirkstead Bridge from 3 November 2025.

The Internal Drainage Board are renewing underground pipes between the river and the pumping station. A temporary bridge will keep the path open for most of the work, but there may be short temporary closures at times.

Thank you for your patience while this work is carried out.

Closure at Hylton Bridge (Route 7)

Essential improvements at Hylton Bridge crossing the River Wear will require a closure and diversion on the C2C Route (Route 7) of the National Cycle Network. From 23 October 2025 to 29 January 2026, a fully surfaced, traffic-free diversion will be in place. Please allow up to 20 minutes extra to complete your journey.

We aim to complete 340 m of the western path by 24 November, which will offer a more direct diversion for the remainder of the works.

North West

Hadrian's Cycleway (Route 72)

The section of Route 72 south of Sellafield station at Ravenglass has been suspended until further notice because of coastal erosion.

If you need to travel south of Sellafield, we recommend using the Northern Rail service between Seascale and Sellafield.

Improvement work around Cleator Moor (C2C Route)

We plan to carry out improvement work on the route around Cleator Moor from approximately mid-September to late October 2025.

A path resurface will increase accessibility and enhance the experience of all users, including local people and visitors journeying the C2C route. Some minor disruption may occur during the period of work. Diversions, where possible, will be signposted.

A short section may be temporarily closed during the work. Full details will be available prior to work commencing. The work is funded by National Highways.

Closure of bridge on Padiham Greenway (Route 685)

The bridge over the River Calder that connects the eastern and western sections of the Padiham Greenway is temporarily closed.

This is due to concerns about the structural condition of the bridge.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We are working with the necessary parties to identify a solution to enable us to reopen the greenway as soon as possible.

Suggested diversions in place are:

  • Diversion 1, following Park Road, Station Road, A671 (Burnley Road, Church St), Blackburn Road (A678), Bridge Street and Padiham Memorial Park. The route is suitable for all users via on-road cycling or pedestrian footways.
  • Diversion 2, following Park Road, Mill Street (one-way flow), Calder Street, Shuttleworth Street, Dragon Street, Albert Street, King Street, A671 (Church Street), Blackburn Road (A678), Bridge Street, Padiham Memorial Park. This diversion involves sections of cobbled road and pavement and may not be suitable for some users.

Route 51 closure at Kidlington

Route 51 will be closed for resurfacing and improvement works in Kidlington, Oxfordshire between St Mary’s Church and Oxford Road.

The works will begin in early August 2025 and should be completed by November 2025. Unfortunately, no signed cycle diversion will be in place and cyclists should plan alternative routes before travelling.

Other pedestrian access points to the meadows surrounding the route will be unaffected.

Route 23 closed near Winchester

Route 23 is currently closed near Winchester due to National Highways works on junction 9 of the M3.

A diversion is currently in place between Easton Lane (eastern side) and Winnall Manor Road (western side). Please follow diversion signage. The closure is expected to be in place until early 2026. We will provide further updates as we receive them.

If you have further enquiries, please contact the Public Rights of Way team at Hampshire County Council.

Hythe to Southampton ferry suspended (Route 2)

The Hythe to Southampton ferry is currently suspended until further notice.

An alternative route is available here (please note that this is not an official diversion).

Alternatively bus service 9 from Southampton to Langley, Fawley or Calshot takes approximately 30 minutes.
