Temporary closure on Route 423 near Symonds Yat
A section of Route 423 on the Peregrine Path between Monmouth and Symonds Yat is temporarily closed from 7 May 2026 following a recent rockfall near Symonds Yat Rock. Forestry England is carrying out rope access surveys along the cliff face to assess whether there is a risk of further falling rocks.
The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately two weeks while survey work is completed, although timings may change depending on findings on site. Barriers and signage are in place at the closure points.
There is currently no signed diversion route.
The route takes you on quiet roads (but very steep in places) past Llandegfedd Reservoir and through the villages of Coed-y-Paen (check out the phone box), Llanbadoc, Usk, Raglan and Dingestow.
Both Usk and Raglan have shops and pubs for refreshments. Arriving in Monmouth the route crosses the River Wye and follows the Peregrine Path along the Wye valley north to Symonds Yat East.
Here there is a canoe hire centre and inviting waterholes including the Saracens Head Pub.
The area is also the gateway for a steady climb to Symonds Yat Rock where nesting Peregrine Falcons can be spotted. Leaving Symonds Yat the route continues on to Goodrich.
The route between Cwmbran and Monmouth is for more experienced cyclists.
There are gaps in the route at Raglan and around Symonds Yat and Whitchurch.
