Who are Walk Wheel Cycle Trust?

Walk Wheel Cycle Trust is an active travel charity. We started out as Cyclebag in 1977 and within two years were building cycle routes, the first one being the Bristol and Bath Railway Path. We were established as a company and registered as a charity in 1984, by this point under the name of Sustrans, a name we were proud to operate under until 2025. Today, our work wouldn't be possible without the hard work of over 500 colleagues and 3,000 volunteers, as well as the support from our 30,000 supporters.

What does Walk Wheel Cycle Trust do?

Walk Wheel Cycle Trust is the charity making it possible for everyone to walk, wheel and cycle. We're the custodians of the National Cycle Network – the UK-wide network of over 12,000 miles of signed paths and routes for walking, wheeling, cycling and exploring outdoors. Of these 12,000 miles, we own roughly 2%, which equates to about 250 miles.

Our goals are:

  • To care for our National Cycle Network to help bring everyone closer to the places and people they love
  • To connect thriving neighbourhoods where everyone is free to live and move with ease
  • To empower millions to walk, wheel and cycle for their health, their wellbeing and their world

Should we require people to wear helmets when they're cycling?
We believe that it is a personal choice whether to wear a cycle helmet or not, and for parents to make that choice for their children. We know cycling has many health, social and environmental benefits. If we are to make the most of these benefits, we need to increase, and, therefore, normalise cycling. Legislating to make cycle helmets compulsory can discourage people from cycling. In the year following the introduction of legislation for compulsory helmets in New South Wales (Australia) there was a 36% reduction in cycling levels.

What's your position on e-scooters?
Sales and use of e-scooters (or electric-scooters) are rapidly increasing in the UK. We'll continue to prioritise active or partially active modes of travel, such as walking, wheeling and cycling, over e-scooters. However, we believe that e-scooters can play a positive role in increasing transport choice while reducing pollution and congestion in our cities.
